Make Your Armpits Happy!
DISCLOSURE: Please note these statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. I think the coconut oil is pretty sensitive to temperature... doesn`t take much change to make a difference. I recommend following deodorant application with a scented powder, which absorbs excess oil and adds a luxurious touch. First of all, let me give you a million thanks for the post, — beeswax is truly a lifesaver! I, too, have been avoiding commercial deodorant and all of its scary ingredients.
Mind, I live in Europe where spray deodorant appears to be more common than stick (with women, at least) and I`ve got lots and lots of spray deodorant options over here; but the one I use is available in the USA too. I set up a double boiler (glass mixing bowl over a pot of gently boiling water since I don`t have fancy things), melted the 5 tbsp of coconut oil in the bowl, and added about a 1 tbsp of chopped sage. Men`s deodorants that contain primarily natural or organic ingredients include Organic Grooming by Herban Cowboy, Aubrey Organics Deodorant Spray, Burt`s Bees Men`s Natural Deodorant and Tom`s of Maine Natural Deodorant. I was reluctant but I threw it all away and made this recipe you shared to use as my new deodorant.
I put it on every few days until the rash was so bad I couldn`t stand it. I left off wearing deodorant for the next week, but then I applied a tiny amount of the leftovers from the stick I purchased. I`m not sure if this has already been addressed but you can get unscented coconut oil - look in the cooking oil section as well as cosmetics. Then I decided to try natural deodorant and used the Tom`s brand with some success.
I also have a hard time with baking soda (I get patchy red rashy under my pits, but only sometimes…) and therefore use the base of the deodorant with arrowroot, but skip the baking soda (unless its for my hubby and then he only gets a pinch of baking soda) and for my essential oils" or non stinky super powers, use the home made thieves.
If you notice foul body odors after using a spray or a stick, consider switching to a deodorant-containing antiperspirant. You can really get creative with this part, but remember to always use at least 5 drops of tea tree oil in each batch. If you`re going to store the homemade version in a jar then the beeswax could probably be left out. I absolutely LOVE this homemade deodorant without baking soda deodorant because it helps with sweating, and keeps you smelling really sweet.
